Steev was, and still remains, a very important cog in the FC Drury machine. It was Steev who seized upon the formation of CUMFC by Dommy Long and Daniel Smith and took the club from playing one off games against supporters assosiations to playing in the Colchester and District Sunday League.
If it wasn’t for all the running around and hard work Steev put into getting the team formed and registered with Essex FA, it would be fair to say they may not be an FC Drury today.
Steev began life as an all action attacking midfielder with a keen eye for goal. One of Steev’s claim to fame within the club was he was always the player who would consistently beat Smithy in goal. Usually with a lob too.
Despite all his running around to get the club formed, it was never Steev’s intention to be manager, but a cruel twist of fate forced Steev’s hand during a training session before the clubs first appearance in the Sunday league.
Ball at his feet, space ahead of him, Steev began a powerful run forward on the indoor 5-a-side pitch, only to find a patch of water and snap his ankle in 3 places. The break kept Steev out for over two seasons, but in the that time Steev embraced the role of manager.
The most successful manager in the clubs history, Mr Tovey has brought the club 3 promotions during his spells in charge. Just before his resignation in the summer of 2007, Steev had guided the Reserves to promotion from Division 6.
Another likable character and one guy always with a smile on his face, Steev stepped down from his role as reserve team manager after his refereeing commitments with the Essex FA increased to doing Sunday matches as well as Saturdays. Despite resigning his role as manager, Steev is still the club secretary and still very much an integral part of the club.
